When the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip price was announced as US$1,380, the atmosphere in the packed room at the Samsung Galaxy 2020 Unpacked event changed noticeably.
Samsung unveiled the new flagship S20 series smartphones – the S20, the S20+ and S20 Ultra all with 5G capability – that it believes will keep it ahead of their competitors. It also revealed an industry-breaking foldable glass phone, the Galaxy Z Flip, and a limited edition fashion statement, the Galaxy Z Flip Tom Browne.
Samsung’s Galaxy 2020 Unpacked launch in San Francisco invited journalists and VIPS to a presentation with Samsung marketing director Rebecca Hirst who called the new Galaxy Z Flip a “new kind of device to kick off a new decade of Samsung innovation”.
Galaxy Z Flip, which is similar to the new Motorola Razr, is the second foldable smartphone by Samsung after the Samsung Fold.
Samsung claims the Galaxy Z Flip uses “ultra-thin glass that folds” over 200,000 times.
“You’re not just bending glass you’re bending the laws of physics,” Hirst said. It certainly looks cool.
“Engineered with first-of-its-kind foldable glass, Galaxy Z Flip bends the laws of physics, and features a 6.7-inch display that folds into a stylish and compact form factor that fits in the palm of your hand1. Designed with an innovative Hideaway Hinge and custom-built UX, Galaxy Z Flip provides elegant new ways to capture, share and experience content. From its stylish design to its flexible camera experience, Galaxy Z Flip opens up a new decade of foldable mobile innovation,” Samsung said in a press statement.
The hinge, which made the Galaxy Fold a debacle, is impressive but it may have its drawbacks too. Journalists were able to open the Galaxy Z Flip and position it at any angle without it folding down. However it did not flip open easily.
“On the upside, it can hold itself open in any position. It opens smoothly, doesn’t creak, and feels pretty good overall. On the downside, the phone is harder to open. It doesn’t flip open like a classic clamshell phone. Opening it with a single hand takes a lot of work, so you’ll probably be using two most of the time,” wrote Dieter Bohn for The Verge.
The Galaxy Z Flip is so small that it can fold into a pocket, it has a foldable glass display and a display cover which will alert you when the phone is folded shut. You can drag items from the top to the bottom. It appears to tick lots of boxes and looks great. It acts as a tripod when opened for the camera or video to operate.
When the Galaxy Z Flip price was announced as US$1380, the atmosphere in the packed room changed noticeably.
“That’s kind of a mixed response,” Hirst said as the price drew tepid applause.
The Galaxy Fold costs US$1,980 and the Motorola Razr was available for US preorder, exclusive to Verizon, for US$1,499.
For fashionistas Samsung also revealed the Galaxy Z Flip Tom Browne, which Samsung admit is for people who want “their technology to be as iconic as their wardrobe”.
It offers the same innovative features as the Galaxy Z Flip but is likely to cost more due to Tom Browne’s involvement. We liked the designer buds that come with it. Judge for yourself if it is worth paying more for.
Samsung Galaxy S20, S20+ and S20 Ultra with 5G
Samsung’s flagship Note 10 and Note 10+ smartphones are the most popular in the world. The S20 series has been built to maintain that lead over rivals.
“The camera is the single-most important feature for consumers purchasing a new smartphone,” said Samsung in a press release.
Its three cameras are superb and raise the bar for smartphones.
Details in Stunning Clarity: With a larger image sensor available on the Galaxy S20 series, camera resolution is significantly increased, for more detailed images with added flexibility for editing, cropping, and zooming. S20 and S20+ have a 64MP camera. S20 Ultra has 108MP camera. Another benefit is that the larger sensors take in more light, so you get rich image quality even in low light situations. The S20 Ultra takes things a step further with the option to shift dynamically between a high resolution 108MP mode and a 12MP mode, thanks to nona-binning technology which combines nine pixels into one at the sensor level.
Groundbreaking Zoom Capability: With the Galaxy S20’s Space Zoom technology that uses a combination of Hybrid Optic Zoom and Super Resolution Zoom, which includes AI-powered digital zoom, even when you are far away you can zoom in close. Use up to 30X zoom on the Galaxy S20 and S20+, or step-up to the revolutionary folded lenses on the S20 Ultra, which uses AI powered, multi-image processing to reduce quality loss at high zoom levels so that users can experience Super Resolution Zoom up to 100X with a clearer view ever than before.
Single Take, Multiple Possibilities: Single Take lets you stay in the moment, while you capture the moment. Thanks to its AI camera technologies, the Galaxy S20 can capture a number of photos and videos, such as Live focus, cropped, Ultra Wide and more that captures your moment the best.
“The Samsung Galaxy S20 is going to be the first 5G phone for a lot of people, and it comes with a 64MP camera and 3x optical and 30x digital zoom to boot. It’s a leap ahead of the S10, but it also carries a price hike and is outclassed by two bigger phones: the Galaxy S20 Plus and S20 Ultra,” wrote Matt Swider on techradar.
Samsung has bunched all its photograph and video features into one. Simply point your Galaxy S20 at a subject, hit the shutter, and wait about 10 seconds. The camera will capture a small movie, some GIFs, a few stills, a portrait, and other modes. It then provides them in a collage where you can pick and choose your favorites.
The changes to the S10 design are minor: the hole punch for the selfie camera has been reduced and moved to the centre, the camera bump has been extended into a rectangle to accommodate even more cameras and there is no jack for headphones, making it the first time that the major flagship phone from Samsung won’t have one.
The 6.2-inch S20 lacks mmWave 5G and has the lowest-end camera array of the three. The 6.7-inch S20 Plus adds mmWave and better cameras. The S20 Ultra is huge at 6.9 inches, with a camera system that’s the best and most complex on any smartphone.
Samsung S20, S20+ and S20 Ultra are priced at US$999, US$1199 and US$1399 respectively. The S20 range goes on sale on 6 March 6.
The S10 range is now reduced in price. The S10e is now US$599, the S10 is US$749 and the S10+ is US$849.
