Apple today announced AirPods Pro, an upgrade to the AirPods, featuring Active Noise Cancellation and, according to Apple, “superior, immersive sound in an all-new lightweight, in-ear design”.

Apple AirPods Pro are available to order on the Apple website and the Apple Store app starting today and in stores beginning Wednesday, 30 October.

“AirPods are the best-selling headphones in the world. The one-tap setup experience, incredible sound and iconic design have made them a beloved Apple product, and with AirPods Pro, we’re taking the magic even further,” said Phil Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “The new in-ear AirPods Pro sound amazing with Adaptive EQ, fit comfortably with flexible ear tips and have innovative Active Noise Cancellation and Transparency mode. We think customers are going to love this new addition to the AirPods family.”

AirPods Pro retail for US$249 in the US and £249 in the UK, It will cost S$379 in Singapore. The regular AirPods cost US$159/£159 and in Singapore S$179. In Australia, the AirPods Pro will set you back A$399 when compared to the standard AirPods which cost A$319 with the wireless-charging case included.

The major change in terms of design is the addition of silicone ear tips that offer a better seal, which is vital for noise-cancelling earbuds.

Apple claims the AirPods Pro offers “superior sound quality” with an audio feature called Adaptive EQ. According to Apple, Adaptive EQ “automatically tunes” low and mid-range frequencies to suit each person’s ears. There’s also an amplifier on board for “pure, incredibly clear sound” and extended battery life. Apple says the drivers inside the AirPods Pro can produce bass down to 20Hz to round out the “immersive” audio quality.

To help you find the right fit, there’s an Ear Tip Fit Test that examines the seal for each ear to determine what size tip will be best for you.

The AirPods Pro employs two microphones on each earbud and software that continuously adapts the level of Active Noise Cancellation to your ears. One microphone keeps tabs on ambient noise while the other faces inward to pick up any additional sound that may remain. Apple says the setup continuously analyses the sound 200 times per second. If that seems familiar, that description is pretty close to Beats’ Pure ANC that’s available on its noise-cancelling headphones. The Airpods Pro will work at the gym, with the IPX4-rated true wireless earbuds, Engadget reported.

The AirPods Pro, like many noise-cancelling audio accessories, have a transparency mode for when you need to hear what’s going on around you or have a quick conversation. You can also activate it directly on earbud itself, thanks to what Apple calls a “force sensor” which you can also use to play/pause, skip tracks or answer calls. Volume adjustments have to be made on the phone but Apple has added a volume slider to Control Centre or you can make the change with an Apple Watch. Siri is always listening, just like on the most recent version of AirPods.

With Active Noise Cancellation on, Apple says you can expect the 4.5 hours of listening or the same 5 hours of playback as previous AirPod models with ANC turned off. There’s also 3.5 hours of talk time with ANC on. When you factor in the included charging case, Apple says you can expect up to 24 hours total. As you might expect, the case can be charged wirelessly on a Qi-certified mat.
