Senate Leader Mitch McConnell will try and ensure that the Republicans vote together and use their majority to ban new witness evidence and have the impeachment charges go straight to a Senate acquittal. If four Republicans break rank, then it is likely the Republicans will seek witnesses in addition to the Democrats.
It has taken a month but the Opposition Democrats party has delivered signed articles of impeachment to the US Senate that will see US President Donald Trump become only the third president in US history to face an impeachment trial.
In a Presidential year, the stakes are high.
The Democrats clearly believe they have a case. Trump is alleged to have abused his presidential power by pressuring Ukraine to investigate Democratic rival Joe Biden, using military aid to Ukraine as leverage. Trump was also charged with obstructing Congress’ investigation.
Republican Senate leader Mitch McConnell said the articles of impeachment would be exhibited on Thursday (local time) at noon, followed by a reading on the floor of the upper chamber. He said the trial would begin on Tuesday after the Martin Luther King public holiday.
House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who initiated the impeachment investigation, said seven “managers” will prosecute the Democratic case against the Republican president. They will be led by Adam Schiff, the chairman of the House intelligence committee, Jerrold Nadler, Hakeem Jeffries, Zoe Lofgren, Jason Crow, Val Demings and Sylvia Garcia.
Pelosi defended her decision to hold off submitting the impeachment articles to Congress for more than three weeks.
“Time has been our friend in all of this, because it has yielded incriminating evidence, more truth into the public domain,” Pelosi said.
Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts will be sworn in to preside on the impeachment trial, and he will administer an oath to all 100 senators to deliver “impartial justice” as jurors.
Here we go again, another Con Job by the Do Nothing Democrats. All of this work was supposed to be done by the House, not the Senate!

After hearing opening arguments and questioning from House impeachment managers and the White House counsel, the Senate is expected to take a vote on whether to allow evidence from witnesses called to testify.
McConnell will try and ensure that the Republicans vote together and use their majority to ban new witness evidence and have the impeachment charges go straight to a Senate acquittal. If four Republicans break rank, then it is likely the Republicans will seek witnesses in addition to the Democrats.
Trump wants the trial dealt with in two weeks.
Pelosi is confident that whatever happens Trump is hurt.
“And yes it is a fact – when someone is impeached, they are always impeached. It is true, once someone is impeached it cannot be erased,” Pelosi said.
Trump’s approval ratings has increased since the House of Representatives voted to impeach the US President on December 18.
