Bindi Irwin announced her engagement to boyfriend Chandler Powell after he proposed at her favourite garden in Australia Zoo on her 21st birthday.

The daughter of Steve Irwin, who was famously known as the Crocodile Hunter, shared the exciting news on social media hours after celebrating her birthday at the family zoo.

“On my birthday I said ‘yes’ and ‘forever’ to the love of my life,” Bindi wrote on Instagram. “Chandler, close to six years ago I fell in love with you and every day since has been a whirlwind of adventure and true happiness.

“I’m so looking forward to spending our forever together as your wife. Here’s to a lifetime of friendship, purpose and unconditional love. Now let’s get married already!”

Chandler, 22, proposed to his long-term girlfriend with a ring made with recycled rose gold metal featuring a lab-grown diamond.

“Chandler was incredibly thoughtful when he chose it,” Bindi shared. “The ring captures the essence of who I am (with its vintage flare) and our life together, with the twisted band and scattered diamonds.”

The sweet moment took place surrounded by animals at Bindi’s favourite place at Australia Zoo – her second home that became a national icon thanks to her late father (who was killed by a stingray in 2006) and mother Terri Irwin in the early 1980s.

Even Bindi’s younger brother, Robert, was there for the sentimental occasion, capturing the special moment on camera.

“I’ve photographed some pretty cool stuff in my time…nothing comes close to this,” Robert shared online. “I was so happy and thankful that Chandler asked me to secretively document the moment that Bindi said yes! One of the most special times ever.

“I am beyond happy for you two. You are true soulmates.”

Terri also shared a sentimental message on Twitter saying Steve would have been happy to hear the news.

“Best day ever,” Terri shared on social media. “Chandler asked and beautiful Bindi said yes. I am so very happy, and I know Steve would be too. Congratulations!”

Chandler, who was born in Florida, US, met his fiancée at Australia Zoo in 2013 while he was on a tour Bindi was leading – a fitting place for the beginning of their love story.

The young couple’s relationship endured the perils of long distance and they began dating publicly in 2015.

While Chandler is a professional wakeboarder from the US, he moved to live with the Irwins permanently in 2018 and now works at the zoo alongside the Australian actress and conservationist.
