Ralph Peters was 'long proud' of his association with Fox News, now the colourful commentator is just 'ashamed'.

Retired Lieutenant-Colonel Ralph Peters, a long-time national security analyst for Fox News, sensationally quit the network on Tuesday after labelling it a “propaganda machine for a destructive and ethically ruinous administration”.

Peters wrote an impassioned email to his colleagues, telling them he was “ashamed” to be associated with the network.

“Today, I feel that Fox News is assaulting our constitutional order and the rule of law, while fostering corrosive and unjustified paranoia among viewers. Over my decade with Fox, I long was proud of the association. Now I am ashamed.” he said in the email obtained by Buzzfeed News.

It seems a tipping point was the news outlet’s treatment of Robert Mueller. The former marine, who was awarded the Bronze Star with Valor and Purple Heart for his actions during the Vietnam War.

Now, of course, the former FBI director is special counsel for the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 US presidential election. And Peters specially mentioned Mueller as a target of a smear campaign he claims Fox News has been running.

“When prime-time hosts — who have never served our country in any capacity — dismiss facts and empirical reality to launch profoundly dishonest assaults on the FBI, the Justice Department, the courts, the intelligence community (in which I served) and, not least, a model public servant and genuine war hero such as Robert Mueller — all the while scaremongering with lurid warnings of “deep-state” machinations — I cannot be part of the same organisation, even at a remove,” he said.

“To me, Fox News is now wittingly harming our system of government for profit.”

He then ripped into so-called “super-patriots” of the newsroom, for being hypocrites.

He says they “justifiably” savaged Barack Obama for his soft approach with Russian President Vladimir Putin but have lost their voice now a Republican President is in charge who has allowed the Kremlin to meddle in elections and dictate terms.

He even went as far as to say Donald Trump is “terrified of his counterpart in Moscow”.

In a brief statement, Fox News said: “Ralph Peters is entitled to his opinion despite the fact that he’s choosing to use it as a weapon in order to gain attention. We are extremely proud of our top-rated primetime hosts and all of our opinion programming.”

Colourful analyst

Peters certainly hasn’t been afraid to speak his mind.

In 2015, he was handed a fortnight suspension after he called Barack Obama a “total pussy” in a live interview.

He later caused a stir when he announced he was going to vote for Hillary Clinton over Trump in 2016.

“I think Hillary Clinton is despicable. She has committed criminal acts. She’s greedy, she’s corrupt, and yes, I’m going to vote for her. I’m going to vote for Republicans down ballot, but I am voting for Hillary Clinton because it’s a vote against Donald Trump,” he told Fox Business in 2016.

“I don’t want Moscow’s man in the White House. This is about the future of our country, it’s about our security. And here’s a guy who apologises for everything Vladimir Putin does.”
