Tesla CEO Elon Musk has always been fixated by cars

Tesla CEO Elon Musk only began entering our subconsciousness after engineers Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning formed Tesla Motors in July 2003.

Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, now has a net worth of US$24.5 billion, and as all tall poppies the 48-year-old Musk has had to put up with a lot of negativity from time-to-time.

Now his mother Maye Musk, the author, mother and dietician, has tweeted a photo of a young Elon Musk working on his car in 1995.

Maye Musk added the caption: “and people said you knew nothing about cars.”

The vehicle in Maye Musk’s tweet was a 1978 BMW 320i that Musk tweeted he bought in 1993 (he has previously said he purchased the car in 1994) for US$1,400 before he enrolled at Stanford University to begin his doctoral study in applied physics and material sciences.

“Couldn’t afford to pay for repairs, so I fixed almost everything on that car from parts in the junkyard,” Elon Musk tweeted

“I hotrodded it by jamming in a 5 speed transmission from a later model I found in a Philly junkyard when the 4 speed transmission failed.”

Elon Musk then alluded to the recent shattered window glass incident at Tesla’s Cybertruck launch event, writing, “Ironically, that’s me replacing broken side window glass. The circle is complete lol.”

“They smashed the window to steal the radio, which was worth maybe $20. USGot a replacement from the junkyard. Btw, great deals available from junkyards! It’s pretty fun fixing/upgrading cars,” Musk said.

In a 2012 interview with Forbes, Musk said that he got rid of the car two years later after a wheel fell off when he lent the vehicle to his intern at his first company, Zip2.

“I scrapped the car at that point,” he said.

The success of Zip2 (it was bought by Compaq for US$340 million in 1999), meant Elon Musk was able to upgrade to a McLaren F1, which he destroyed in a crash in 2000 when driving with his future PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel.

“Peter said, ‘So what can this do?’ and like probably No. 1 on the list of famous last words, I said, ‘Watch this,’” Elon Musk said in a 2012 interview with PandoDaily. “So I floored it and did a lane change on Sand Hill. We hit an embankment, like a 45-degree embankment on Sand Hill, which tossed the car into the air like a discus, and it kept rotating with about three-foot of air clearance.”

The McLaren F1 was not insured.

Tesla had added a “Caraoke” library of songs and lyrics to its software. Model S, Model X or Model 3 owners can now connect their Netflix, Hulu and YouTube accounts to the center console. Tesla is also adding access to Spotify Premium and more games to the existing Tesla Arcade. It has a partnership with gaming company StudioMDHR for its game Cuphead.
