Senator Jeff Flake sacrificed his political future with an anti-Trump tirade, just hours after fellow Republican Bill Corker lashed the POTUS.

Two Republican senators have taken aim at the leader of the free world, with Bob Corker and Jeff Flake both condemning Donald Trump’s presidency.

Alliances and agreements that ensure the stability of the entire world are routinely threatened by the level of thought that goes into 140 characters —
Senator Flake

Speaking prior to Mr Trump’s meeting with senators just hours ago in Washington, Senator Corker told CNN President Trump is not taken seriously on the world stage.

“The President has great difficulty with the truth on many issues,” he said at the Capitol.

“It’s amazing. Unfortunately world leaders are very aware that much of what he says is untrue.”

This was followed up by Senator Flake, who took his opportunity on the senate floor to launch a stinging attack on Mr Trump in an impassioned speech that brought fellow republicans to their feet in ovation.

Like Sen. Corker, he also revealed he would not be sitting for re-election.

“If I have been critical, it’s not because I relish criticising the behaviour of the President of the United States,” Sen. Flake said.

“If I have been critical, it is because I believe that it is my obligation to do so, as a matter of duty and conscience.”

He continued, “The notion that one should stay silent as the norms and values that keep America strong are undermined and as the alliances and agreements that ensure the stability of the entire world are routinely threatened by the level of thought that goes into 140 characters — the notion that one should say and do nothing in the face of such mercurial behaviour is ahistoric and, I believe, profoundly misguided.”

Clearly held in high regard by his peers, Sen. Flake’s announcement to step down after his current term, prompted a procession of sorrow-laced well wishes.

Senator Mitch McConnell said: “On behalf of myself and I believe many of my colleagues, we’ve just witnessed a speech from a very fine man.”

Senator John McCain added: “It’s been one of the great honours of my life to have the opportunity to serve with a man of integrity, of honour, of decency and commitment to not only Arizona but the United States of America. I have seen Jeff Flake stand up for what he believes in knowing full well there would be a political price to pay.”

The President has now dedicated five separate tweets to degrading Sen. Corker in the last 13 hours. In his most recent, he called the 65-year-old “liddle’ Bob Corker”, and other Twitter users didn’t miss (as you can see below).
