US President Donald Trump’s long-time personal lawyer and confidant Michael D. Cohen has had his home, office and hotel room raided by the FBI on Monday.

It is understood the US Attorney for Southern District of New York executed the warrants, in part, based on a referral from special counsel Robert Mueller.

In the search according to the New York Times, records relating to several topics including payments to adult film actress Stephanie Clifford aka Stormy Daniels were confiscated.

Clifford claims she and the real estate mogul had an affair in the mid-2000s, and Cohen allegedly paid Clifford $US130,000 to sign a non-disclosure agreement.

Cohen’s own lawyer Stephen Ryan said the seizure of records, including emails, tax documents and business records, was “completely inappropriate and unnecessary”.

“Today the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York executed a series of search warrants and seized the privileged communications between my client, Michael Cohen, and his clients,” Ryan said in a statement.

“I have been advised by federal prosecutors that the New York action is, in part, a referral by the Office of Special Counsel, Robert Mueller.

“The decision by the US Attorney’s Office in New York to conduct their investigation using search warrants is completely inappropriate and unnecessary.

“It resulted in the unnecessary seizure of protected attorney client communications between a lawyer and his clients.”

Ryan said Cohen has been fully cooperative with authorities in the investigation into Russian meddling, and has turned over thousands of documents to Congress and sat for depositions under oath.

However, The Washington Post reported Cohen was under investigation for campaign violations and bank fraud.

Trump said the raid was a “real disgrace”.

“It’s an attack on our country in a true sense,” he said.

He added Mueller’s team was the “most biased” group of people and the raid was part of “a total witch-hunt”.
