Vegemite has launched a premium version of the much-loved Australian spread — and it’s called Vegemite Blend 17.

But you’ll have to be quick to get your hands on the limited-edition offering, as it is only releasing 450,000 of the 150 gram jars.

The Herald Sun describes it “as a richer, syrup-like spread that’s a touch sweeter with a more bracing finish than the original recipe… Those who like the consistency of Marmite will give this new version the thumbs up, though it remains unmistakably Vegemite.”

Vegemite returned to Australian ownership this year when dairy company Bega bought it from US food giant Mondelez International as part of a $460 million deal that also included other Kraft-branded products.

Shoppers will have no trouble picking it out in the aisles — it’s gold packaging has not been missed by social media users (see below).

Many have suggested it is purely a marketing stunt to get people to pay close to double the price of the original Vegemite, and if so it’s a good one because it has created quite a buzz.
